Career

Initially, Khan started his singing career with uncle Kale khan and father Ali Baksh Khan. Basically he was from Kasaur, Pakistan

Basically, he mixed the best of three traditions into his Patiala-Kasur style– the Behram Khani elements of Dhrupad, the gyrations of Jaipur, and the embellishments of Gwalior. 

Additionally, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Bombay Chief Minister Moraji Desai helped him acquire Indian citizenship and accommodation. Later, he moved to a bungalow situated in Mumbai’s Malabar Hills. 

Initially once Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan demanded Rs 25,000 per song. However at that time singers such as Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi charged below Rs 500 per song. Basically he hoped that the director will give up and leave. However, to Khan’s disappointment, director Asif agreed to pay the price quoted by him and even paid a sum of Rs 10,000 in advance.  He sang for Mughal-e-azam as well.

Cause of Death

Basically, in the last few years of his life, he had been partially paralyzed by a chronic illness . Hence he stayed in Basheer Bagh Palace in Hyderabad on 23 April 1968. Also, Munawar Ali Khan, his son, continued to support him by singing and performing until his death

Facts

  • Firstly, in 1968, Harisadhan Dasgupta made a documentary film about Khan, titled Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib.
  • Secondly, A student of his, Malti Gilani, founded the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Yaadgaar Sabha in 2017. Through it, his memory and music will live on.
  • Thirdly Basheerbagh’s main street is named in his honour, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Marg.
