Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, popularly known as PV Sindhu, is an Indian Badminton Player. Moreover, she is the only Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. She was also honored with the Padma Shri. She is the only Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. P.V. was also honored with the Padma Shri in March 2015, which is the fourth highest civilian honor in India. In 2018, Sindhu also ranked seventh in the Forbes list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes.” She also once stood first on Forbes India’s first list of 22 Young Achievers.

Early life and family of PV Sindhu

PV Sindhu was born on 5 July 1995. Her birthplace is Hyderabad. Also, her parents’ names are P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya. Moreover, both her parents are former Volleyball players. Her father, P. V. Ramana, was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2000. She has an elder sister, Divyaram Pusarla is a national-level handball player and later became a doctor.

Education and early career

PV Sindhu also completed her primary education at Auxilium High School. Sindhu was also good at studies in her childhood and always wanted to be a doctor. Afterward, she started playing Badminton when she was just eight and a half years old. She first played it for fun; however, soon, she realized that she wanted to make a career in it. Then, she enrolled at the Indian Railway Institute in Secunderabad to learn the game basics from Mehboob Al. Afterward, she joined Pullela Gopichand’s badminton academy to enhance her skills. Sindhu is, to date, coached by Kim Ji Hyun. 

Career

PV Sindhu made her international debut as a Badminton Player in 2009. She began in the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo and won the bronze medal. She played at the 2010 Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge, where she bagged the silver medal in the singles category. Afterward, in 2011, she came into the spotlight when she won a Gold medal in the singles event at the Douglas Commonwealth Youth Games. However, her best performance came in 2012. She defeated the 2012 London Olympics gold medalist Li Xuerui of China at the Li Ning China Masters Super Series competition.

Sindhu also became the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championship in 2013. She also defeated Japanese Nozomi Okuhara in the semifinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics and made her entry into the finals.

Sindhu also reached the final of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Then, she became the youngest Indian to make a podium finish in an individual event at the Olympics. However, she was later defeated by Carolina Marin in the 83-minute final match. Sindhu also secured the World Tour title after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 World Tour final.

Recently, On 1 August 2021, P.V. Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. Then, she beat China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13 and 21-15. Hence, she won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
