Rochelle Rao was born on 25 November 1988 in Chennai, India, She holds the nationality of Indian and belongs to a Christian background. Her father, Nicolas V Rao, of Telugu-German ancestry is a naturalist while her mother, Wendy Rao, is an Anglo-Indian.

Her sister Paloma Rao is an actress, Radio and Video Jockey. His brother Late Noel Rohan Rao was in the US Army when he died while serving in Afghanistan in 2006. Rochelle Rao’s 38-year-old brother, David, is Noel’s twin. For many years he lived abroad but now lives with his family in Tamil Nadu. He is married to Karina Rao.

Rochelle Rao competed in the fifth Pantaloons Femina Miss India South pageant in January 2012 where she was first runner-up.
