Introduction to AR Rahman
AR Rahman, a singer, composer, and songwriter who has risen to become the pride of India, is a man with natural talent. Initially composing scores for various documentaries and jingles for advertisements, Rahman soon came to the Bollywood industry with the Tamil film Roja. Ever since he has been a part of the industry and won India’s heart. Thus, he got the nickname Mozart of Madras and Isai Puyal.

AR Rahman, or Allah Rakha Rahman, was born on January 6th, 1967, to a middle-class family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He began learning piano at the age of four and assisted his father in his studio. His birth name was AS Dileep Kumar, but he later converted his religion and took up a new name. He has an in-house studio named Panchathan Record Inn.

Career Journey
AR Rahman started off his career journey with a band titled The Roots. He later joined another rock band called Nemesis Avenue. In Nemesis Avenue, he was a producer arranger and was fortunate enough to perform at the concert Jive Live. He also started to compose jingles with Alwyn’s new Trendy range of watches. In 5 years, he wrote lyrics for over 300 ads.
In 1991, he met famous director Mani Ratnam through a producer Sharada Trilok. This paved the way for his debut movie Roja in 1992. The songs of Roja are still sensational to Indian households, and Rahman got immediate recognition. Following the success of Roja, Rahman was invited for several movies, including the politically charged film Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda, Gentleman. and much more. The song Vande Mataram composed by AR Rahman for celebrating 50 years of Indian Independence, became an immediate sensation and is still hummed by Indians in pride. He compose the song Jai Ho for the movie Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, and he won India’s first oscar.
His first Hollywood movie was a comedy film titled Coples Retreat in 2009, which won him the BMI Award for Best Score. In 2010, he was also awarded the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
Family and Relationships
Rahman’s father, RK Shekhar, was a film score composer and a conductor in Tamil and Malayalam films. His mother’s name is Kareema (initially, Kasturi). He also has three siblings, AR Reihana, Fathima Rafiq, and Ishrath Qadri. The family converted to Islam in 1989. He is married to Saira Banu and has two daughters and one son.

- He won the Best Music Director for the movie Roja in 1992, Minsara Kanavuin in 1996, and for the film Lagaan in 2001.
- Later in 2002, He again won the praise of Best Music Director for the movie Knnathil Muthamittal in 2002.
- He was also the Best Music Director for the year 2017 for the films Kaatru Veliyidai and Mom.
