Geeta Kapoor (Geeta Maa) is a well-known Indian choreographer who has worked in Hindi cinema. Likewise, Geeta Kapoor is a judge on Dance India Dance, an Indian reality dance talent competition. She has classical dancing training.

Geeta made her television debut in 2008 with the reality show Dance India Dance, where she formed the Geeta Ki Gang. She has also choreographed several popular Bollywood songs.

Early Life and Family

Geeta Kapoor was born on July 5, 1973, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and raised there exclusively. She has enjoyed dancing since she was a youngster and has competed in several dance contests. Rani Kapoor is her mother’s name. Her father’s name is not known. There is no information available about her siblings.

She joined Farah Khan’s company at the age of 15 to clarify her dance thoughts. Geeta then went on to choreograph professionally and create her dancing academy. She did modeling for a while when she was younger, in addition to choreography and dance.

Career of Geeta Kapoor

  She later worked with Farah Khan on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Mohabbatein, Kal Ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na, and Om Shanti Om, as well as the musical Bombay Dreams (2004).  

She choreographed for a number of Bollywood films, including Fiza (2000), Asoka (2001), Saathiya (2002), Heyy Babyy (2007), Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008), Aladin (2009), Tees Maar Khan’s Sheila Ki Jawani’ (2010), Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya (2011), and Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012). (2012).  

She has also choreographed award shows and concerts such as Temptation Reloaded, as well as the Pepsi IPL opening ceremony.

She started out as a secondary background dancer in many song sequences such as the song ‘Dum Tara’ of Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, ‘Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aaye’ from the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and ‘Gori Gori’ from Main Hoon Na, using a mix of classical and modern dance moves.

Geeta as Reality TV Show Judge

Geeta made her television debut with the reality show Dance India Dance (season 1) on Zee TV in 2008, with co-judges choreographers Terrence Lewis and Remo D’Souza. Mithun Chakrabarty was the grand master. In 2009, she appeared on the season 2 of Dance India Dance, along with choreographers Terrence Lewis and Remo D’Souza as judges and mentors.

After that, along with Farah Khan and Marzi, Kapoor was a judge on Dance Ke Superkids. Along with Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Anurag Basu, she judged Super Dancer Chapter 4, a dancing reality competition on Sony TV, in 2021.

Controversy

In 2015, she was detained by the Versova police for reportedly striking a pedestrian called Nisar Noor Mohammed on JP Road in Vateshwar Naka in Versova at approximately 5 a.m. According to witnesses, she was travelling at a high pace on an empty road when she hit Nisar, who was strolling along the side of the road. The sufferer had a right knee fracture. Despite Geeta’s best efforts to address the situation outside of the police force, the victim was not prepared, and he filed an F.I.R. against her, leading to her arrest.

• Choreographer Feroz Khan called her Geeta Maa for the first time and later everyone started calling her that.
