Lalit Kumar Modi is an Indian businessman and cricket administrator. He is currently a fugitive. Lalit was the founder, first Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also ran the tournament for three years until 2010. Lalit was the Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during 2005–10. Moreover, he served as the President of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (2005–09 and 2014–15) and vice president of the Punjab Cricket Association.

Early life, family, and education of Lalit Modi

Lalit Modi was born on 29 November 1963. His birthplace is Delhi, India. Lalit is the elder son of Krishna Kumar Modi and his wife, Bina Modi. He also has an elder sister named Charu Modi Bhatia. He has a younger brother named Samir Modi. Gujar Mal Modi is his grandfather who established the Modi business conglomerate and the town of Modinagar.

He joined Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, in 1971. Later, he moved to Saint Joseph’s College, Nainital, as he was getting kidnapping threats. However, in 1980, Lalit was expelled from St. Joseph’s for leaving school to watch a movie.

Between 1983 and 1986, he studied electrical engineering and business administration in the United States.

Personal Life of Lalit 

Lalit Modi was married to Minal. He met her in the USA during his student days. Lalit also has three children Karima, Ruchir and Aliya. Karima is also his first child from her previous marriage. Recently, Lalit has been seen sharing close pictures of him and Sushmita Sen. 

Career

Soon after Lalit’s education, he played an active role in his family business set up by his grandfather Raj Bahadur Gujarmal Modi. His father, Krishan Kumar Modi, took care of this business. Lalit Modi enjoyed a privileged position at the top management level when he was appointed the President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises. In 1992, Lalit was chosen as the Executive Director of Godfrey Phillips India. He managed to take the company to new heights successfully. Modi Enterprises and Philip Morris International also endorse Godfrey Phillips India.

Entertainment

However, his business interests soon diverged to the entertainment networking organisation. In 1993, Modi made his presence felt in this field with a joint venture between Modi Entertainment Networks (MEN) and Walt Disney Pictures. In the same year, Lalit also attained the broadcasting rights of Fashion TV for ten years. The following year, Lalit became the sole distributor for the whole of India for ESPN.

He signed a ten-year contract with the channel heads. This agreement was valued at 975 million dollars, where he collected funds from local cable companies for televising ESPN. This was done under his support and guidance.

Lalit became a member of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in 1999. However, he failed to succeed in his ambition. In 2004, he joined the Rajasthan Cricket Association. Afterwards, he became the association’s president, earning him a seat at the BCCI. The following year he was elected as the Vice-President of BCCI. During their three years as Vice-President of BCCI, Lalit Modi was actively involved with the commercial aspects of cricket. He also helped the BCCI rake in an annual income of 1 billion USD. In 2008, he was the mastermind behind the Indian Premier League (IPL).
