Surekha Sikri is a famous Indian theatre, film, And television actress. She has also received multiple awards, including three national film awards and a Filmfare award. Moreover, she’s a veteran of Hindi theatre. She also made her debut in Kissa Kursi Ka. Also, she has appeared in many supporting roles in Hindi and Malayalam films along with Indian Soap operas.

Early life, family, early career, and death of Surekha Sikri

Surekha Sikri was born on 19 April 1945. Her birthplace is Uttar Pradesh. She was also brought up in Almora and Nainital. Her father was in the Air Force, and her mother was a teacher. 
She completed her studies at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Afterward, in 1971 she graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD). Later, she worked with the NSD Repertory Company for more than a decade. Then she moved to Mumbai for a varied career. She died on 16 July 2021 at 76 in Mumbai, Maharastra. She was also suffering from complications of two brain strokes.

Personal Life

Surekha Sikri was married to Hemant Rege. She also has a son, Rahul Sikri, who lives in Mumbai and works as an artist. Her husband, Hemant Rege, died due to heart failure on 20 October 2009. Popular actor Nasseruddin Shah is her former brother-in-law, as his first marriage was with her step-sister Manara Sikri, also known as Parveen Murad. She is their daughter Heeba Shah’s maternal aunt. Heeba acted as the younger version of her aunt’s character, Dadisa, in the television serial Balika Vadhu. 

Career

Surekha Sikri moved to Mumbai to make a career in the film industry, in the 70s. She got her first breakthrough role in 1978 film Kissa Kursi Ka. In this movie, she also worked with famous actors like Shabana Azmi, Utpal Dutt, Rehana Sultan and Manohar Singh. Afterward, she played supporting roles in many films. She worked in more than 100 films in her career. Her major films include names like-

• Jo Bole So Nihaal,
• Dillagi,
• Badhaai Ho

• Sarfarosh.

Apart from films, Surekha was also very active in the television world. From the year 1996, she started working actively in the television industry. She became a household name among the Indian audience with her portrayal of Balika Vadhu.

• Surekha Sikri was born and brought up in Almora, Uttar Pradesh.

• Surekha was an alumnus of the National School of Drama.

• Moreover, she worked in theatre for many years before entering the world of acting.
• She rose to fame in the television industry with the famous show Balika Vadhu. Here, she played one of the main characters, Kalyani Devi Dharamveer Singh aka Dadisa.
• Also, she was paralyzed in 2018 and had a brain stroke in 2020. On 16 July 2021, she breathed last in a private hospital in Mumbai.
